It is a little ironic, perhaps, that Dean Smith’s success or failure with Norwich City this season is likely to be defined by the extent to which his new club’s summer recruits can fill the void left by a big-money departure. The same was true at Smith’s former club, Aston Villa, of course, among whose replacements for the Manchester City-bound Jack Grealish was the £38 million former Norwich winger, Emi Buendía.
