Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson set to undergo a medical at Arsenal

Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson is set to undergo a medical at Arsenal today ahead of his move from French club Dijon. Rúnarsson, 25, has been targeted following Emi Martinez's departure to Aston Villa in a £20 million deal, which will see £17m paid up front and the remaining £3m in add-ons. Arsenal have been speaking to Dijon about Rúnarsson since the weekend and have agreed on a deal worth around £1.5m for him to move to the Premier League. Mikel Arteta wants back-up to push Bernd Leno and has also targeted Brentford’s David Raya, who worked with Gunners coach Inaki Cana at Griffin Park. Arsenal would still welcome Raya to their squad but striking a deal has proved difficult, as Brentford want more than £10m for the Spanish keeper. Cana has also worked with Rúnarsson at FC Nordsjaelland in Denmark. Arteta was forced into a change in his goalkeeper line-up as Martinez wanted regular starts. He was not in the matchday squad to face Fulham in the Premier League opener at the weekend as he headed to Villa for the final part of his deal. Arsenal won the FA Cup last season with Martinez in goal covering for Leno and he desperately wanted to be No 1 this season or move away from the Emirates Stadium where he would gain more first-team football. Rúnarsson has impressed in two years at Dijon in Ligue 1, surviving both seasons following his move from FC Nordsjaelland, where he earned his first Iceland caps and went to the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He is set to be part of Arsenal’s squad for their Premier League fixture against West Ham at the weekend when they will look to build on their victory against Fulham at Craven Cottage in the opening fixture of the top-flight season.
