Player Ratings – Bristol City 0-3 Aston Villa

Aston Villa are through to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after a comfortable 0-3 victory at Ashton Gate.

Goals from Anwar El Ghazi, new signing Bertrand Traore and Ollie Watkins sealed the deal for Dean Smith’s men.

It was an impressive performance from Villa’s second-string side which will give Smith something to think about going into Monday evening’s Premier League fixture against Fulham.

PLAYER RATINGS

Below are my ratings of how the players performed. Please vote for your player of the match here.

Jed Steer 6 (out of 10)

Six probably seems a little harsh on Jed because he did what was required of him when he was called upon. The problem was, there wasn’t a lot for him to do. I only really remember one shot from range in the first half which I would expect him to save anyway.

Frederic Guilbert 8

There are rumours in the media suggesting that the right-back could be on his way out in some capacity or another but based on this performance, manager Dean Smith may want to think twice. Guilbert linked up well with Traore on the right-hand side of the pitch and looked solid defensively all night.

Ahmed Elmohamady 7

Many would have been surprised when the Egyptian was named in the centre of defence. In fact, you only have to look at some of the responses on social media once the team news was released. Elmohamady looked comfortable all night and hardly put a foot wrong.

Kortney Hause 7

Kortney Hause was a shoo-in for a start tonight. He tends to be Smith’s first choice back-up option to Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa. The former Wolves defender looked at home against Bristol City and composed on the ball.

Neil Taylor 7

It was a classic Neil Taylor performance. Nothing out of place or fancy. He kept everything simple defensively and was only really exposed when Anwar El Ghazi didn’t track back and he was left outnumbered.

Henri Lansbury 7

One of Henri Lansbury’s better recent performances. The midfielder had to settle for being a bench warmer last season and although he will have to do more to get a place in the first team, based on this performance he will be a solid back-up. With six key passes, more than any other player on the pitch, the attacking players would have been grateful for his service.

Jacob Ramsey 7

Starting just his second game for the first team but it didn’t show. His vision to pick out Bertrand Traore for the second goal of the night was sublime. The 19-year-old has a very bright future and it will be interesting to see what Smith has planned for him for the remainder of this season.

Marvelous Nakamba 7

Another player who has been linked with a move away from the club with several Turkish clubs reportedly interested in his services. I personally hope we can keep hold of him as I feel on his day he is a solid defensive-minded midfielder. Another solid performance today which allowed Ramsey and Lansbury dictate play as he broke Bristol City’s attacking threat.

I gave Davis an 8 in the player ratings

Keinan Davis 8

The opening first-half from Davis was probably the best I have seen from him in a Villa shirt. His new contract may have given him a boost. Davis looked sharp and composed. His hold up play was what you would expect from a big man up top. The only reason Traore pipped him to the man of the match was that Davis failed to score.

Bertrand Traore 9

My man of the match. It usually takes new signings a little while to settle in but he looked at home from the first minute. He linked very well with Guilbert and looked very comfortable on the ball. He topped his debut off with a beautifully taken side-footed volley.

Anwar El Ghazi 7

I am unsure if Anwar El Ghazi has lost his way a little or this is as good as he will get. He may have scored but his decision making, first touch and finishing leave a lot to be desired and you can see why Smith is looking to strengthen his attacking options. The winger had more shots than anyone else in the game (8) and only managed 3 on target.
