Jota departs Aston Villa

Aston Villa have today announced that Jota has departed the club after the two parties agreed to mutually terminate his contract.

The Spaniard had one year remaining on his contract and has found his playing time limited since moving to Villa Park from Birmingham City in 2019. The deal was said to be part of Gary Gardner’s move in the other direction.

It was thought that the move initially could be a positive one as Jota would be working with Dean Smith after the pair had worked together at Brentford but it wasn’t to be.

WHY NOW

With Villa being eliminated from the League Cup, Jota’s chances of game time would be very limited. He has Jack Grealish, Trezeguet, Bertrand Traore and Awar El Ghazi all ahead of him in the pecking order.

Jota isn’t getting any younger either so will no doubt want more playing time. It is unclear if he will return home to Spain or find another club in England. The 29-year-old made 16 appearances for Villa with the latest coming as a substitute appearance against Stoke on Thursday.

Dean Smith suggested that Villa would not be making any further signings unless some players departed. He did suggest a few wanted a move away and this could be the beginning of a clear-out. Youngster Cameron Archer also joined left Villa on loan yesterday after agreeing to a deal with Solihull Moors.
