If Steven Gerrard is the rockstar, Gary McAllister is his rock. The new Aston Villa head coach even described the former Scotland captain as such when appointing him as his Rangers No 2 in May 2018. That, of course, was Gerrard’s first foray into senior management, and in McAllister he identified the ideal combination of someone whom he knew and trusted, who had been there and done it in the dugout, and who was also well versed in the unique pressures and expectation of life in the Glasgow bubble.
